The Wood at Hand — Recovered Hardwood Rice Bowl

Before turned bowls became decorative objects, they were practical household wares made from whatever suitable wood was available.

I found the wood for this bowl as a cut section of the kind produced when a tree or large limb is divided into manageable pieces for moving or disposal. It had been outdoors, but the grain caught my attention and the wood still appeared sound and usable. I brought it back to the shop without knowing—or recording—its species.

At the lathe, that otherwise overlooked cutoff became an adult-sized bowl particularly well suited for rice. Its smooth outer curve invites the hands to settle around it, while the form is equally at home holding nuts, candy, snacks, and other small servings.

Natural checking remains beneath the raised foot. It is most pronounced to the touch on the very bottom, then travels only briefly onto the lower exterior before giving way to a smooth surface. The checking does not reach the bowl’s interior, and the surrounding wood remains firm, without looseness or flex.

I chose to leave it rather than risk losing the piece by removing more wood. That decision became part of the bowl’s story: recognize what remains usable, make something practical from it, and stop before the pursuit of perfection costs the piece itself.

The Street of the Cup-Makers

In tenth-century York, turned wooden cups and bowls were such familiar parts of daily life that Coppergate took its name from Old Norse words meaning “the street of the cup-makers.” Archaeologists later found hundreds of wooden cores left behind as those vessels were turned.

The equipment has changed, but the underlying idea remains recognizable: begin with available wood and make something useful for the table. This recovered cutoff became another simple vessel intended to be held, used, and gathered around.

About This Piece

This one-of-one bowl was hand-turned in an end-grain orientation from personally recovered hardwood whose species remains unidentified. The wood was dry when turned and was not stabilized or filled.

The bowl’s proportions give it the presence of a generous individual rice bowl, with a smooth exterior that feels natural in adult hands. It can also serve nuts, candy, snacks, and other small portions, or simply be enjoyed as a decorative piece.

It was finished with walnut oil, followed by a paste wax made with walnut oil, beeswax, and carnauba wax.
