Our Seconds are pieces that came out a little differently than intended. They may show a making irregularity, an unexpected response from the wood, or another characteristic that led me to set them apart from my main offerings.
That does not mean every crack, knot, void, asymmetry, or unusual grain feature makes a piece a Second. Natural wood has character of its own, and many of those features are intentionally left visible in my regular work. Seconds are pieces where I decided something about the finished result fell outside what I was aiming for.
Depending on the individual piece, that might include:
- An offset bore or unintended asymmetry
- A surface check, crack, or void that affected the finished result
- Tool marks, sanding inconsistencies, or a finish irregularity
- Unexpected dye absorption or color variation
- Warping or a shape that moved away from the intended design
- Another making or material characteristic that I felt warranted a reduced price
Each Second is evaluated individually. Its listing will describe the relevant characteristic along with any limitations on use or care. A Second still needs to be suitable for the specific use represented in its listing; Seconds status is not a substitute for functional suitability.
Seconds are offered at a reduced price, but they are still pieces I chose to complete and offer rather than discard—a different outcome from the original intention, with its own character.
