Pecan Tall Shot Glass — One of One
Dimensions: Approx. 3½ inches tall × 1½ inches in diameter
The Pioneer’s Pillar is handcrafted from Illinois-harvested pecan (Carya illinoinensis) purchased directly from the person who harvested it. Its tall, narrow form emphasizes the wood’s vertical grain and the contrast between warm brown heartwood and lighter sapwood.
This piece was created before the addition of a lathe to the Gentry Crafted workshop. It was shaped and hollowed using an angle grinder, drill press and motor-mounted sanding equipment, then sanded and finished by hand. Pecan is exceptionally hard and demanding to work, requiring patience and a measured pace. In some respects, the earlier shaping process proved better suited to this wood than later lathe work.
Pecan also has an important place in the Gentry Crafted story. The first spoon was made from a different piece of pecan that had been stored by a family member for more than 20 years, and the first turned bowl was also made from pecan. The Pioneer’s Pillar comes from a separate, locally harvested Illinois source.
- Finish: Walnut oil, carnauba wax, and beeswax.
- Care: Hand wash only. Do not soak or place in a dishwasher. Dry promptly after use.
