Plains Cottonwood Bowl (One of One) Dimensions: ~3¾" diameter × 2⅜" tall
Hand-turned from Plains Cottonwood (Populus deltoides), this "one of one" bowl is a quiet argument against the reputation of a misunderstood tree. Cottonwood is often dismissed as a weed species — fast-growing, short-lived, unremarkable — but spend time with a piece like this and the case falls apart entirely. This blank was collected along Cherry Creek in Parker, Colorado, where cottonwood grows in the riparian shadows it has claimed for centuries.
What the lathe revealed is nothing short of gothic. The sapwood runs pale and clean around the rim and upper walls, nearly cream in tone, while the heartwood pushes in from below in deep amber and rich brown — swirling, pooling, colliding in patterns that read more like brushwork than grain. Multiple knots punctuate the exterior, each one a small world of its own: tight concentric rings radiating outward, surrounded by flowing figure that bends and curves in response. The interior floor catches warm amber light where the heartwood concentrates at the center, giving the bowl a luminous quality that shifts with the angle of the light.
The form is wide and low — almost drum-like — with vertical walls, a broad opening, and a thick rounded rim that gives the piece a grounded, substantial presence. The underside bears the circular indentation that is the honest mark of the hand-turning process.
This is a piece for someone who knows that the best finds are the ones others walked past.
- Finish: Sealed with polymerized walnut oil worked into the wood, finished with a blend of walnut oil, carnauba wax, and beeswax for a soft, food-safe luster.
- Care: Hand wash only. Refresh the finish occasionally with walnut oil or food-safe wood conditioner.
- Best For: A compelling conversation piece, a generous catch-all, or an everyday vessel that earns a second look every time.
- Note: Wood is a natural material and colors may display differently depending on your monitor, screen calibration, and browser settings. The photos are taken in consistent natural lighting to represent the piece as accurately as possible.
