Pecan Tall Shot Glass

Dimensions: ~3‑1/2 inches tall × 1‑1/2 inches diameter

Hand‑turned from Pecan (Carya illinoinensis), this shot glass carries both personal history and the natural resilience of one of North America’s hardest native hardwoods. Pecan belongs to the hickory family, renowned for its density, toughness, and shock resistance. The heartwood ranges from light to medium brown with reddish undertones, while the sapwood is pale yellow, often creating subtle contrasts. Its grain is usually straight but can be wavy, and when worked carefully, it reveals a finish that is both striking and enduring.

This wood has been part of the maker’s journey from the very beginning—used for the first spoon, spoon rest, shot glass, turned bowl, and platter. Pecan is notoriously challenging to turn, especially through quartersawn grain where its density resists the tool, but that difficulty is part of its character. The reward is a vessel that feels solid in the hand, with warm tones and quiet shifts in grain that speak to patience and persistence.

Finished with polymerized walnut oil, beeswax, and carnauba wax, the surface is smooth, food‑safe, and softly lustrous. Over time, it will season naturally, deepening in tone and developing a patina that reflects both the wood’s quiet strength and the care invested in its making. More than functional, this shot glass is a testament to endurance—of the material, the craft, and the story it carries.
